Through our service programs, Holy Communion seeks to continue and extend the ministry of Christ by responding to the needs of our neighborhood, the nation, and the world. Below is a summary of our activities during 2005. (We offer this information not to boast – as the Apostle Paul says, ‘I can only boast in the Lord’; we just want you to know what we are about.)
- Our food cabinet distributes groceries semimonthly to individuals and families throughout Philadelphia. Last year, we distributed over 5000 bags of groceries.
- Our members help prepare meals for people with AIDS at University Lutheran Church in West Philadelphia, which feeds 80-100 people each week.
- Baby Manna: we collected funds to provide baby formula and supplies to families in need.
- Hurricane and Tsunami Relief: we sent a sizable gift to Lutheran Disaster Response to help with the catastrophes that displaced so many people.
- Each Thanksgiving, we serve meals to 300 homeless and needy residents of our city.
- Every Christmas, we supply hundreds of gifts to the Salvation Army, the Bethesda Project for the Homeless, and the Winter Shelter.
- Our fellowship hall serves as an emergency site for the Bethesda Project Homeless Shelter.
- During the coming year, our congregation is cosponsoring the rehabbing of a home in West Philadelphia through Habitat for Humanity.
